West Virginia to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in 2023 Duke’s Mayo Bowl

We’re trusting the climb all the way to Neal Brown being doused in mayonnaise

The 2023 college football bowl pairings are out, and in a surprising twist, the West Virginia Mountaineers will find themselves matched up in what’s probably the best destination Mountaineers fans could’ve hoped for: the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina, against the North Carolina Tar Heels on December 27th at 5:30 PM ET on ESPN.

The matchup will mark the third-ever meeting between the two programs and a rematch of the Mountaineers’ last postseason trip to Charlotte, where Pat White led them to a 31-30 win over the Tar Heels in the 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl for their fourth consecutive bowl victory. WVU head coach Neal Brown has never faced UNC as a head coach, but a win here would put a nice bow on the 2023 season and give the Mountaineers a lot of momentum heading into 2024.

West Virginia ended the regular season with an 8-4 record, surpassing preseason expectations, and finished fourth in the Big 12 Conference standings behind Texas, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma.

North Carolina also finished the season with an 8-4 record and seventh in the ACC.

The Mountaineers hold a 1-1 record in previous iterations of the Mayo Bowl. West Virginia’s first appearance in the bowl—then named the Continental Tire Bowl—ended with the Mountaineers losing to the Virginia Cavaliers, 48-22.
