Saturday’s tussle with the Texas Tech Red Raiders will mark the 2021 Homecoming for the West Virginia Mountaineers. I, as a 40-year-old, straight married man with two kids, am the foremost expert on the uniforms of the Mountaineers and therefore, I wanna talk about uniforms. Saturday’s game will be the Stripe the Stadium game, the annual game where the fans alternate wearing blue or gold and the stadium looks cool for an afternoon.
With the stadium sufficiently striped so somewhere someone is shaking (I tried really hard on that alliteration) let’s decide what uniform we should wear!
Traditional
The best damn uniforms in college. Blue tops with blue shirts above gold pants. Its an easy choice and the Mountaineers have worn this combination four times in the past three years, going 3-1 in that stretch. Its a safe choice for the Mountaineers. It looks good on television and its what everyone thinks of when you think West Virginia in Morgantown. Can’t go wrong with this choice.
Striped Uniforms
If you’re going to stripe the Stadium in Blue and Gold, you might as well stripe the uniforms in both Blue and Gold. This is an excellent choice for Stripe the Stadium in my opinion as it gives the Blue, Gold, Blue look and alternates well. The yellow pops on television and the Mountaineers were fairly successful in these threads. They have a two-game losing streak in these but that comes on the heels of a three-game winning streak in these beauties.
Reverse Stripes
This is an interesting combination. I’m a fan of alternating brights and darks in general and this accomplishes that dual-tone look. I also really like the gold helmet with the gold pants. The Mountaineers are 2-2 in these unique offsets but they work well with the idea of striping Milan Puskar on Saturday.
