The 2021 West Virginia football season will be here in less than 100 days and if Neal Brown’s coaching history tells us anything, it is that year three could be the one to take the program to new heights. His third season at Troy saw his highest overall win total, finishing 11-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
A group of incoming West Virginia football recruits, headlined by Mountain State native Wyatt Milum, have arrived on campus. Take a look at the eight players of Neal Brown’s 2021 signing class joined the team during the spring.
West Virginia Athletics
The West Virginia baseball team was eliminated from the Big 12 Tournament after losing to top-seeded Texas in a 3-2 low-scoring affair on Friday night. WVU finished the year 25-27, with a 8-16 mark in Big 12 competition.
West Virginia senior golfer Mark Goetz was named to the Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team. Goetz is the second player in school history named to the PING All-Midwest Region Team. Matthew Sharpstene earned those same honors in 2019.
On Saturday at the 2021 NCAA East Preliminary Round, redshirt freshman Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University track and field team finished in third place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a school program record time of 9:51.81. She will move on to compete at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships from June 9th-12th.
Although West Virginia fell short with a season-ending 3-2 loss, the results for reliever Jacob Watters were mostly positive. The right-handed sophomore held the Longhorns to one run without surrendering a hit, while striking out eight.
Former West Virginia pitcher Alek Manoah dazzled in his Major League Baseball debut at Yankee Stadium. Manoah, a 2019 first-round draft pick, tossed six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and two hits allowed to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees.
The West Virginia men’s basketball alumni team, Best Virginia, is set to make its second appearance at The Basketball Tournament (TBT), hoping for another run at the $1 million prize. Mountaineer fans will have the chance to see them play, as they host a regional in Charleston at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. Let’s take a look at who will suit up for Best Virginia in July.
The walk-on mentality carried former West Virginia long snapper Kyle Poland through his collegiate career, and now it is helping him stay the course as he pursues an NFL career.
Six Mountaineer baseball players are now listed on the West Virginia Black Bears roster, as the team continues its first season in the MLB Draft League. The league is a new venture that provides draft-eligible prospects with an opportunity to compete in front of MLB scouts and against other top talent.
Around the Big 12
A five-run fifth inning propelled two-seed TCU to its third Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship, as the Horned Frogs knocked off four-seed Oklahoma State, 10-7. TCU previously won championship titles in 2014 and 2016.
Four Big 12 programs were selected to compete in the 2021 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. One-seed Texas will host the Austin Regional, one-seed TCU will host the Fort Worth Regional, one-seed Texas Tech will host the Lubbock Regional, and two-seed Oklahoma State will travel to the Tuscon Regional.
Around the NCAA
The Arkansas baseball team was rewarded for its dominant run through the Southeastern Conference, landing the #1 overall seed in the NCAA baseball tournament. The Razorbacks won all 10 of their SEC series and wrapped up their first conference tournament championship on Sunday.
Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams initially planned to sit Chris Paul for Game 4 on Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers. Paul changed his coach’s mind in an emotional pregame conversation, and had 18 points and nine assists.
