West Virginia football coach Neal Brown has announced that Lance Dixon, a redshirt freshman linebacker, has signed a grant-in-aid and will transfer to WVU from Penn State. Dixon will have four years of eligibility remaining to play during a four-year period.
The final Associated Press Poll of the season has been released and the West Virginia men’s basketball team remains inside the top 15. The Mountaineers fall three spots to #13. As for the other Big 12 teams, Baylor finished at #3, Texas moved up to #9 after claiming the conference title, Oklahoma State finished at #11, Kansas at #12, and Texas Tech at #21.
On this episode of “Three Guys Before The Game,”, the guys react to the Mountaineers’ favorable #3 seeding and the Big 12 Conference’s success of placing seven teams in the tournament field. This is just the third time in school history that WVU will enter the tournament seeded #3 or better.
The West Virginia men’s basketball team will be the #3 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament and will face the #14 seed Morehead State Eagles in the First Round on Friday. This will be WVU’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since it reached the Sweet 16 as a #4 seed in the 2018 tournament.
The West Virginia men’s basketball team will be making its 30th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history when it takes on Morehead State on Friday. This will also be Bob Huggins’ 10th tournament appearance in 14 seasons at WVU.
No Division I basketball team has won more games in the 2021 calendar year than Morehead State, West Virginia’s first-round opponent in the NCAA Tournament.
For the first time since 2017, the West Virginia women’s basketball team will play in the NCAA Tournament. The #17 Mountaineers are the 4-seed in the Hemisfair Region and will play 13-seed Lehigh in the first round. The game will be played Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU. WVU and Lehigh have only met one other time, in 1999, when the Mountaineers fell in that game, 89-73.
The West Virginia women’s basketball team is staying put in the Associated Press Top 25. WVU checks in at #17 once again this week after advancing to the Big 12 championship game.
After a notching three, double-figure scoring performances in the 2021 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship last week, sophomore guard Kirsten Deans of the women’s basketball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
On Sunday, the #17 West Virginia women’s basketball team lost the Big 12 conference Championship 76-50 to the top seeded, #5 Baylor. BU’s defense overwhelmed the Mountaineers, forcing them to shoot a measly 27% from the field and just under 19% from three-point range.
The #17 West Virginia women’s basketball team was defeated by #5 Baylor in the Big 12 Championship game, by a final score of 76-50. The Mountaineers now will look towards the NCAA Tournament.
West Virginia Athletics
The West Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are sending multiple divers to a single championship for the first time in program history. Sophomore Owen Johns led the team on the final day, securing his bid with a fifth-place finish in the 1-meter. Fellow Mountaineers Jacob Cardinal Tremblay, Jake Lowe, and PJ Lenz will also be diving at the national championship. Senior swimmer David Dixon will also be competing.
The West Virginia gymnastics team closed out the Backyard Brawl series with a win against Pittsburgh in the regular season finale, 196.100-193.400, on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Mountaineers were able to come out on top in three of the four events winning vault, uneven parallel bars, and floor exercise, while also hitting their season-high total score.
The West Virginia baseball team continues its homestand by playing host to Morehead State for a two-game, midweek series on March 16th and 17th, at Monongalia County Ballpark. Freshman left-handed pitcher Ben Hampton will get the start for the Mountaineers on Tuesday, while freshman right-hander Carlson Reed will start on Wednesday. WVU is 5-5 this season.
Sophomore Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia cross country team finished 42nd overall at the 2020 NCAA Championships on Monday, giving the Mountaineers a 29th-place team finish. Redshirt sophomore Katherine Dowie was the Mountaineers’ second finisher on the day in 150th place and senior Hayley Jackson took 183rd.
Former Greenbrier East Spartan Mikey Kluska hit a two-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the West Virginia baseball team an 8-7 win over Central Michigan in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader. CMU won the first game 12-4.
The West Virginia golf team played 36 holes in the first day of the George Hannon Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas. After day one, WVU is tied with Kansas State for seventh place at 14-over-par.
The West Virginia men’s soccer team was handed its first loss of the season this Sunday against Western Michigan, 1-0. The Mountaineers found themselves struggling to create scoring opportunities, largely due to a red card called on WVU’s junior midfielder Aaron Denk-Garcia in the 64th minute.
The West Virginia tennis team was swept, 7-0, against #12 Baylor to finish the weekend with a second-straight loss on Sunday. The Mountaineers will look to pick up their first Big 12 win of the season when they return to action and play TCU on March 19th in Morgantown.
Around the Big 12
#1 seed Baylor will begin the NCAA Tournament by taking on #16 seed Hartford at 2:30 on Friday in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Bears are favored by 25 or 26 points on most sports books.
The Texas men’s basketball team is back in the Big Dance, earning a #3 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament, where they begin by facing the #14 seed Abilene Christian Wildcats on March 20th.
