The West Virginia Mountaineers (18-9, 11-6 Big 12) are a No. 3 seed in the Midwest region of the 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Mountaineers will square off with the Morehead State Eagles in Indianapolis on Friday, March 19. Tip off for that game has not been announced as of the time of writing. The Eagles finished the season with a 23-7 (17-3 OVC) record, after knocking off top-seeded Belmont on March 6th to win Ohio Valley Conference title.
If the Mountaineers make it past the Eagles, they will take on the sixth-seed San Diego State Aztecs from the Mountain West Conference or Jim Boeheim’s eleventh-seed Syracuse Orange. Possible Sweet Sixteen matchups include the Clemson Tigers, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Cleveland State Vikings and Houston Cougars.
The Mountaineers were a No. 5 seed in the 2018 NCAA tournament, making it to the Sweet Sixteen before losing to top-seeded Villanova Wildcats, 90-78.
The one-seeds in this year’s tournament are the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Baylor Bears, Illinois Fighting Illini and the Michigan Wolverines .
The Big 12 Conference has six other teams in the tournament this year; No. 1 Baylor (South Region), No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks (West Region), No. 3 Texas Longhorns (East Region), No. 4 Oklahoma State Cowboys (Midwest Region), No. 6 Texas Tech Red Raiders (South Region), and No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners (West Region).
