The 1987 Sun Bowl featured the Oklahoma State Cowboys with two future NFL Hall of Fame running backs in Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders and it featured current Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy at quarterback. In honor of that game, which was played against our West Virginia Mountaineers, the Cowboys are wearing their 1987 throwbacks. The Mountaineers however do not care to relive that game, one they lost on a failed two-point conversion, so they are wearing their alternate home uniforms of blue lids, gold jerseys and blue pants.
The Mountaineers went 4-2 in this combination when with the pickaxe font but lost the only time they wore it last year with the new font. Last year in this combination quarterback Austin Kendall threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns and TJ Simmons hauled in 7 passes for 130 yards and a score.
The Mountaineers wore this combination against the Cowboys in 2015 in a game they lost in overtime.
