A second Mountaineer on the West Virginia football team has tested positive for the coronavirus. The player, whose name has not been released, will enter a self-isolation period for the next 14 days, and other student-athletes who may have been exposed will be mandated to self-quarantine.
Earlier this spring, former West Virginia standout Billy Legg returned to his alma mater when he was appointed assistant to head coach Neal Brown. It marks Legg’s third different role on the WVU football staff after his outstanding playing career ended in 1984.
College basketball analyst Andy Katz has ranked West Virginia’s Kevin Jones as one of the best rebounders in college basketball over the last decade. The former Mountaineer was ranked ninth on the list. Jones averaged 10.9 rebounds per game during his senior season in 2012, and he had 1,048 rebounds in 139 career games at WVU.
West Virginia and Pitt announced on Thursday that the Backyard Brawl men’s basketball series, set to expire after next season’s game in Morgantown, will be extended through the 2023 season. WVU is 3-0 since the series returned in 2017 after the breakup of the Big East Conference.
West Virginia Athletics
Danville, West Virginia, native and Scott High School graduate Carter Lyles fulfilled a lifelong goal by signing with the West Virginia baseball program last year. Lyles appeared in three of WVU’s 16 games before the rest of the season was canceled. Now the Mountaineer freshman will be heading to the Northwoods League for the summer.
Two West Virginia student-athletes are being recognized with Academic All-America Honors by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Junior rifle shooter David Koenders was named to the men’s first team and senior gymnast Abby Kaufman was named to the women’s third team.
Three Mountaineers from the West Virginia golf team have been named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars. Philipp Matlari and Etienne Papineau were honored for the second consecutive season, while Kurtis Grant earned the accolade for the first time in his career.
The West Virginia University Athletics Communications Office was honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), winning 13 awards for Excellence in Publications and Digital Design, including seven best in the nation awards. It is the second year in a row the WVU Athletics Communications Office led the country in CoSIDA awards.
Best Virginia, the West Virginia men’s basketball alumni team, has announced that it has withdrawn from The Basketball Tournament (TBT). Best Virginia was set to face the Marshall alumni team, Herd That, in the opening round of this year’s tournament.

Kansas State Athletics, in conjunction with university and county medical officials, has announced it has paused all voluntary workouts for football student-athletes for 14 days following its most recent COVID-19 test results.
The Big 12 Conference and Learfield IMG College have announced the launch of an e-sports tournament for all 10 member schools. Each Big 12 school will host a single-elimination qualifying tournament online featuring Madden NFL 20 with one winner representing each school in the Big 12 Conference Championship tournament. Some of the games will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
