It seems that even in a year without an NCAA tournament, West Virginia can’t avoid issues with a selection committee.
A couple of weeks after coming in at number five in the TBT Power Rankings, Best Virginia was given the ten seed in the COVID-19 altered version of The Basketball Tournament, missing out on a first round bye and setting the squad up for a first round match up on July 5th with the Elmore Brothers and Marshall’s alumni team Herd That.
The path won’t get easier after that, as Floyd Mayweather’s Money Team will be waiting for the Mountaineer alumni in the second round, assuming a win over the Herd alumni. The Money Team features former NBA role player Tony Wroten and also includes former West Virginia standout Devin Williams, the only ex-Eer to join a team besides Best Virginia. If Best Virginia gets the upset, a rematch with tournament darling Overseas Elite (now including former NBA star Joe Johnson) will likely await in the quarterfinals.
Best Virginia was slated to host a regional at the Charleston Civic Center, but plans were changed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the entire tournament will be staged in Columbus, Ohio. The tournament will now be decided with 23 games over 10 days in Columbus, with the caveat that any team with a player who tests positive for COVID-19 during the course of the event will be disqualified.
Keep following The Smoking Musket for coverage of the tournament as we finally get some sports back in our lives.
