West Virginia football coach Neal Brown held a press conference recently to answer some questions before the just start of spring football practice. Some of the topics included potential changes with new coaching hires, competition at the quarterback position, and how the WVU running game will improve.
Spring practice is not about the depth chart to Neal Brown. That said, some competitions are more interesting than others, so here are five positions in particular that bear close watching at West Virginia this spring.
West Virginia head football coach Neal Brown has announced that Jeff Casteel will join the Mountaineer football staff as a defensive analyst. Casteel returns to WVU after serving as the defensive coordinator and linebackers’ coach at Nevada for the past three years.

West Virginia’s Oscar Tshiebwe was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, a unanimous selection for the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, and made the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. Miles “Deuce” McBride was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. Derek Culver earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors.
West Virginia forward Oscar Tshiebwe collected his fourth Newcomer of the Week honor in the season’s final Big 12 men’s basketball weekly awards. He recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds in WVU’s win over #4 Baylor.
West Virginia is back in the Top 25 following a week-long absence. The Mountaineers jumped up to #22 in the AP Top 25 and #23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll thanks to Saturday’s 76-64 win over then-#4 Baylor.
While the West Virginia men’s basketball team picked up an upset win over #4 Baylor on Saturday, it wasn’t the day’s only bright spot for senior guard Chase Harler. Just prior to tipoff, Harler obtained something else, a fiancée.
#3-seeded Oklahoma will meet #6-seeded West Virginia in Thursday’s final quarterfinal game. The Sooners swept the regular season series.
West Virginia senior Jermaine Haley stepped up in his final game in the WVU Coliseum. Haley had nine points, three rebounds, and two assists on senior day to help the Mountaineers get a win over #4 Baylor.

The West Virginia women’s basketball team will face Texas in the quarterfinal round on Friday. The Mountaineers and Longhorns split the regular season series.
Headlined by redshirt senior guard Tynice Martin’s second-team selection, three members of the West Virginia women’s basketball team were named to the 2020 All-Big 12 teams. Along with Martin’s selection to the All-Big 12 Second Team, redshirt junior guard Kysre Gondrezick and sophomore forward Kari Niblack earned honorable mention status from the conference.
In its final game of the regular season, the West Virginia women’s basketball team lost to TCU, 77-63, on Saturday. Redshirt senior guard Tynice Martin led the Mountaineers in scoring, with 17 points in the last home game of her WVU career.
The Big 12 quarterfinal game between #22 West Virginia and Oklahoma will be televised on ESPN2 and is scheduled to begin at approximately 9 p.m. ET.
West Virginia Athletics
Redshirt sophomore, and West Virginia native, Noah Adams became the second WVU wrestler to win a Big 12 title, as he defeated South Dakota State’s Tanner Sloan in the 197-pound finals. Adams is now 32-0 this season, with 13 wins over ranked opponents, and will be heading to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which will be held March 19-21.
Junior catcher/designated hitter Paul McIntosh hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the 11th inning to help the West Virginia baseball team to a 2-1 win over Mercer on Sunday. The victory gave WVU the series win over the Bears, helping the Mountaineers improve to 10-5 this season.
Four members of the West Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams qualified for finals to open the first day of the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, hosted by the Mountaineers at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park on Monday.
The West Virginia gymnastics team scored a season-high road score in a 196.75-196.175 loss at Iowa on Sunday. The Mountaineers finished second to the Hawkeyes in every event except balance beam.
The West Virginia baseball team has seen early season success on both offense and defense. Young pitchers and hitters have combined to show promise for the Mountaineers thus far.
The West Virginia tennis team suffered its third loss of the season to #27 Baylor, 6-1. WVU’s lone singles victory came in the #6 position from sophomore Nicole Roc, who has now recorded two consecutive victories over Big 12 opponents.
The West Virginia men’s soccer team opened its 2020 spring slate with a 1-0 loss to UMBC on Sunday. In the first of six spring, exhibition matches for the Mountaineers and first-year coach Dan Stratford, WVU allowed an early Retriever goal in the fourth minute, which proved to be the difference.
Around the Big 12
Udoka Azubuike was chosen as Kansas’ ninth Player of the Year, while Scott Drew won Baylor’s first Coach of the Year award to headline the 2019-20 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball awards. Marcus Garrett of Kansas was the Defensive Player of the Year, while Baylor’s Davion Mitchell was named Newcomer of the Year and Texas Tech’s Jahmi’Us Ramsey won the Freshman of the Year award.
Oklahoma’s Austin Reaves and West Virginia’s Oscar Tshiebwe earned the season’s final Big 12 men’s basketball weekly awards. Reaves picked up his first Big 12 Player of the Week award, while Tshiebwe collected his fourth Newcomer of the Week honor.
Kansas captured its 19th Big 12 regular season championship and an NCAA record 62nd all-time conference title. With a 17-1 league mark, the Jayhawks finished 2019-20 Big 12 play two games ahead of second place Baylor for their 15th outright Big 12 title.
The bracket has been determined for the 2020 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship. Baylor once again collected the top seed after winning its 10th-consecutive and 11th overall Big 12 regular-season title.
Four student-athletes from Baylor, along with Lady Bears head coach Kim Mulkey, Kansas State’s Ayoka Lee, and Oklahoma State’s Natasha Mack headlined the 2019-20 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Women’s Basketball Awards. Baylor’s Lauren Cox brings home the eighth Big 12 Player of the Year honor for the Lady Bears.
The Oklahoma State wrestling team won three individual titles to help the Cowboys win their eighth consecutive Big 12 Wrestling Championship. West Virginia had one individual winner with, Coal City native, Noah Adams.
Around the NCAA
Things are maybe becoming a little clearer in college basketball after the conclusion of the regular season. #1 Kansas has been the most dominant in recent weeks, keeping its hold on the top spot in the AP poll for the third straight week.
One week before Selection Sunday, a pair of conference races ended with three-way ties at the top, both of which affected this bracket’s composition. This is what the bracket looks like before the power conference tournaments kick into gear on Wednesday and Thursday.
Paul George and Kawhi Leonard are two of the best wing defenders in the NBA. Yet, LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers found an ingenious way to score on them in Sunday’s third Battle of LA by not trying to score on them at all.
