With many receivers struggling to get their hands on the football Saturday against Texas Tech, West Virginia sophomore wide receiver Winston Wright Jr. had a career-high in receptions in the 34-27 loss. For the year, Wright leads the Mountaineers in receptions with 28 and receiving yards with 360. His only score came on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Jarret Doege against Oklahoma State.
After transferring to West Virginia from New Hampshire, Alonzo Addae has stepped into a starting cornerback spot in his senior season and is leading the Mountaineers in interceptions with two. He is also the team’s third-leading tackler.
The West Virginia football team took a step back last weekend when it dropped a close game to a struggling Texas Tech team. The Mountaineers were plagued by more dropped passes and a struggling rushing attack in the loss. Now WVU eyes a return to the win column when #16 Kansas State comes to Morgantown looking to stay unbeaten in conference play.
Near the midway point of the Big 12 Conference season, Kansas State is best positioned to challenge Oklahoma State at the top of the league standings. West Virginia head coach Neal Brown said that K-State is “a disciplined football team that plays extremely hard and they are difficult to prepare for in all three phases.”
West Virginia sophomore Oscar Tshiebwe and junior Derek Culver were given preseason nods from the Big 12 Conference. Tshiebwe was named to the preseason All-Big 12 team, while Culver was given an honorable mention nod. Last season, Tshiebwe was named to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team, along with fellow Mountaineer Miles McBride, when he averaged 11.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Culver was given an honorable mention to the All-Big 12 team last year.
The West Virginia men’s basketball team has announced four additional nonconference home games for the upcoming season. The Mountaineers will host Youngstown State on December 2nd, followed by a matchup against Robert Morris on December 9th. WVU will then face Richmond on December 13th, and Buffalo will travel to Morgantown on December 29th. Before these nonconference games, the Mountaineers will travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic.
West Virginia Athletics
The West Virginia women’s soccer is staying put this week at #6 in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I poll, which was released on Tuesday. This week’s lack of movement comes on the heels of a hard-fought 1-0 win at Oklahoma over the weekend, the Mountaineers’ fourth straight win of the season which improved them to 6-1 on the season. WVU also remains at first place in the Big 12.
Mountaineer fans are officially coming back to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. West Virginia University and its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics officially announced that fans will be allowed at a 25 percent capacity for the first time this season when the #6 Mountaineers face Kansas on Friday night.
In what has been a year full of surprises, Reed Sunahara’s West Virginia volleyball team is delivering another one this fall. The Mountaineers swept TCU two weeks ago to boost their record to 5-3 and move them into a tie with Kansas State for third place in the Big 12.
At the start of the 2020 campaign for the #15 West Virginia volleyball team, expectations were moderate. As the season has progressed, so have the Mountaineers, who now sit at an impressive 5-3, after starting the season at 0-2.
Sophomore defender Gabrielle Robinson is the latest West Virginia women’s soccer player to be given the Big 12 Defensive Player of the week following her performance in the Mountaineers’ 2-1 win over Baylor.
In Week 7 of the 2020 NFL Season, seven former Mountaineers saw action. Nick Kwiatkoski started at linebacker for the Las Vegas Raiders and recorded seven tackles. Rookie Kenny Robinson earned his first NFL appearance in the Panthers and Saints game on Sunday.
Another Mountaineer alumna is making a major push on the professional pitch. Former West Virginia standout and current Chicago Red Stars defender was named her team’s Rookie of the Year after a great first season.
Around the Big 12
Baylor’s Jared Butler was selected as the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year, while Texas Tech’s Marcus Santos-Silva picked up Newcomer of the Year. Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham was named the preseason Freshman of the Year. Check out which Big 12 standouts were named to the preseason All-Big 12 Team.
TCU’s Grace Collins was awarded Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, while Horned Frog teammate Tijana Duricek earned Defensive Player of the Week. Oklahoma State’s Emily Plotz was the Goalkeeper of the Week, while Texas Tech’s Gisselle Kozarski was named Freshman of the Week.
Kansas State teammates Shelby Martin and Aliyah Carter joined Baylor’s Kara McGhee in the Big 12 volleyball weekly awards. McGhee picked up her third Defensive Player of the Week award. Martin was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Carter was recognized as the Rookie of the Week.
Around the NCAA
Now that Ohio State’s Justin Fields has joined the party, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Alabama’s Mac Jones have some competition in the Heisman race. BYU’s Zach Wilson is also still in the hunt as this season’s Heisman dark horse.
Following a week of debating the Miami Dolphins’ sudden change at quarterback, the Tua Tagovailoa era begins at home Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. Whether the timing is the best or not, Tagovailoa’s first start will be one of the most anticipated games of the NFL’s Week 8 schedule.
