The West Virginia Mountaineers fell to 3-2 (2-2 Big 12) on the season this evening, after getting into the least likely Big 12 shootout ever — a physical, pound-the-ball competition with the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock.

Takeaways
- If you really want to, you can draw a lot of parallels between this team and the 2003-2004 Rich Rodriguez squads. We have all the pieces, but it’s just not put together yet. We’ll get there, and I think you can probably take some comfort in that — because God knows there’s nothing truly comforting about this season.
- I don’t know how you fix it, and I don’t envy the people that are tasked with that duty, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team with as many drops as this team. We’re just constantly shooting ourselves in the foot. Get a sports psychologist on a Zoom call with these guys or something. We have to get them out of their own heads.
- It took until this game for me to notice how bad Jarret Doege’s footwork is, and I’m not sure why. But even with the wide receiver drops and his own footwork working against him, Doege still managed to complete 64% of his passes for 347 yards and a touchdown.
- Speaking of Doege, did you know that Jarret Doege’s older brother played quarterback at Texas Tech while Neal Brown was offensive coordinator there? Big if true.
- WE HAVE DISCOVERED TIGHT ENDS. Mike O’Laughlin might be good, and I’m cautiously optimistic about TJ Banks. Maybe we should throw to them more often.
- Remember when everyone got all mad at Dana Holgorsen and started talking about how he should give playcalling duties to his offensive coordinator? Yeah...that.
Player of the Game
Leddie Brown, running back
Of course it’s Leddie again, and it will likely continue to be Leddie until something clicks with these wide receivers. Brown finished the day with 21 carries for 77 yards and two touchdowns, and added seven receptions for 47 yards.
Tweet of the Game
If Sam doesn’t shape up he might find himself as the second James to get himself locked away in a shed in Lubbock.

What’s Next?
West Virginia is back at home on Halloween, when they’re scheduled to take on the Kansas State Wildcats — provided both teams can meet the Big 12 requirement for available players — in what will certainly be spooky outing. That game will kickoff at noon and will be broadcast on either ESPN or ESPN2, with final determination coming later tonight or tomorrow.
