The West Virginia golf team, just five years into varsity play, has earned its first-ever top-25 ranking. Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll ranked the Mountaineers No. 25 in its first poll of the season, coming off a T-16 finish at the The Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Five Big 12 teams dot the rankings: Baylor (No. 3), Texas Tech (No. 6), Oklahoma (No. 9) and Texas (No. 10). TCU and Kansas also received votes in the season-opening poll.

WVU will host The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Oct. 7-8, at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport. The tournament began in 2015, the program’s first year at the varsity level.

Last April, WVU hosted the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championships at The Greenbrier, in White Sulphur Springs. The Mountaineers qualified for the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship and finished sixth out of 13, just one place from advancement.
