Apologies for the later than normal Big 12 Roundup, apparently when you are 37 and decide to have a drink and cigar at midnight, your body hates you for the remaining day and you get a hangover like you did 5 kamikaze shots while staying up to 5 AM.
No. 12 Texas Longhorns 36, Oklahoma State Cowboys 30
For the first time since 2008, the No. 12 Texas Longhorns were able to pull out a victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium with a 36-30 win on Saturday evening in front of a sellout crowd. Texas had lost four straight games in the series.
Texas also benefited from some questionable decisions by Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy, who went for two fourth downs in the second half while in field-goal range. A fake field goal that featured the holder throwing a shovel pass to tight end Jelani Woods looked particularly bad in retrospect.
Oklahoma State Cowboys gained leads early in both halves but were mostly trying to claw their way back from behind. That strange juxtaposition is a nice microcosm of the type of game that unfolded Saturday night as the Cowboys fell 30-36 in Austin for the first time since 2008.
SMU Mustangs 41, No. 25 TCU Horned Frogs 38
You’ve never seen an SMU team celebrate they way they did in the corner of the stadium Saturday at Amon G.
TCU fans got what they wanted in one regard, Saturday afternoon when they welcomed SMU to Amon G. Carter Stadium - the insertion of true freshman quarterback Max Duggan into the starting lineup.
It didn’t go as planned.
Iowa St. Cyclones 72, UL Monroe Warhawks 20
This ULM team took Florida State to the wire earlier in the year, and it looked like they were ready to do the same. Then Brock Purdy would absolutely obliterate the entire state of Louisiana, and wherever the poor town of Monroe is.
Just to give you a quick look of what’s to come in the recap here, Purdy had six touchdowns, three passing, three rushing, and over 500 total yards of offense an Iowa State record. Purdy would break new Cyclone Hall of Fame inductee Seneca Wallace’s all-purpose yards record with the former #15 Iowa State star QB in attendance today.
Baylor Bears 21, Rice Owls 13
I want to start this article with a question. If you had to choose between the following two options, what would you choose? A) Baylor plays in a visibly frustrating game in which they let a very bad Rice hang around but Baylor’s underlying performance is good, or B) Baylor comfortably wins against a bad Rice team but the score is misleading and the underlying performance is bad.
