#11 Texas Tech Red Raiders: 3
West Virginia Mountaineers: 0
In a game that was delayed for over 3 hours, Texas Tech’s (23-11) (6-6) pitching was dominant as they shut down the Mountaineer (22-13) (6-6) offense to salvage a game in this series.
Caleb Kilian, the TTU starting pitcher, tossed a nearly-perfect complete game shutout of the Mountaineers on Sunday. He allowed just 2 base hits all game, walked none and struck out 9 to give his team a much-needed win.
Tyler Doanes and Darius Hill were the only 2 baserunners to reach all game for WVU.
Texas Tech got 2 runs in the 5th inning, both charged to Kade Strowd, on a RBI double by RF Gabe Holt and a sacrifice fly by 2B Brian Klein.
After Strowd got pulled, freshman Ryan Bergert threw 3 shutout innings of relief to keep WVU within striking distance going into the late part of the game. However, the Mountaineers couldn’t muster the comeback, allowing Doug Facendo to get a RBI single in the 8th inning to make it 3-0 Red Raiders.
With the series victory in hand, their 3rd consecutive against a Top 25 opponent, the Mountaineers will surely crack the Top 25 in this week’s poll. Although the significance of that will be downplayed by Coach Mazey and his players, it’s a big deal for the WVU Baseball program.
The Mountaineers will travel to Happy Valley for a midweek game against the Penn State Nittany Lions on Wednesday at 6:30PM. You’ll be able to watch the PSU broadcast or listen to the WVU broadcast.
After that, WVU will host the Kansas Jayhawks over Easter weekend for a 3 game series. The Jayhawks (19-16) (4-8) should not present nearly as difficult of a challenge as our previous 3 series’, but the Mountaineers will need to be prepared, nonetheless. Check back in on Friday for a full series preview!
Let’s go, Mountaineers!
