In a game that was never really close, the West Virginia Mountaineers (15-21) fell to Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (17-16) 109-91 to bring an end to a season that has been little short of a disaster.
The game, in some ways, played out as a microcosm of the season as Derek Culver — who has quickly become the key player for the Mountaineers after the losses of starters Esa Ahmed, Wesley Harris, Beetle Bolden and Sagaba Konate — sat out for the first half for unspecified reasons before returning in the second half. Culver finished with 11 points and 2 rebounds.
And while everything went horribly wrong for WVU, things went extremely well for Coastal Carolina, who shot 55 percent from the floor, led by Devante Jones’ career high of 32 points on 10-15 shooting. The Chanticleers jumped out to an early 19-12 lead and would never trail again.
The loss sets the record for most points scored on a West Virginia team in the WVU Coliseum.
