The Mountaineers (12-7) certainly had the luck of the Irish on their side on Sunday afternoon. On a beautiful day in Williamsburg, Virginia, WVU beat William and Mary (13-4) 12-2.
The Mountaineers got another fantastic start out of Kade Strowd on Sunday afternoon. The junior threw 7.0 innings, allowing just 3 hits, 4 walks and 2 runs, while striking out 8. Strowd earned his 2nd win of the season and propelled the Mountaineers to a big series victory.
The scoring got started in the 1st inning, when Darius Hill hit a sacrifice fly to right field to put WVU up 1-0 early. They added another 2 runs in the 2nd on a groundout by freshman Tevin Tucker.
In the 5th inning, Kevin Brophy hit a 3-run homer to extend the lead to 6-0.
William & Mary got 2 runs back in the 7th inning on a triple by Brandon Raquet which knocked Kade Strowd from the ballgame.
WVU absolutely blew this one open in the 8th inning, scoring 6 runs. Paul McIntosh hit a solo home run to lead off the scoring, Brandon White followed with a RBI triple, Tevin Tucker and Tyler Doanes each hit RBI doubles and the Mountaineers got 2 more runs on a balk and a bases loaded walk.
The win gives the Mountaineers a 2-1 series win and brought their season record to 12-7. They’ll be back in action Tuesday afternoon at home vs. Youngstown State before heading to Waco, Texas for their first Big XII series next weekend.
