GAME NOTES
- West Virginia and Akron will meet for the fifth time in series play that began in 1905. Each team has won two meetings with West Virginia winning the last two contests. The last meeting took play on Nov. 28, 2011, a 77-56 Mountaineer win at the WVU Coliseum.
- Bob Huggins accepted his first Division I head coaching position at Akron in 1984. He guided the Zips to a 97-46 overall record and to postseason play in three of his five seasons. The Zips posted 20 or more wins on four occasions. He was inducted into the Akron Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
- Sophomore forward Derek Culver was named to the All-Big 12 Preseason Honorable Mention Team, while freshman forward Oscar Tshiebwe was named the Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year. Tshiebwe is the second McDonald’s All-American to enroll as a freshman at WVU (Chris Brooks, 1986). He is the third McDonald’s All-American to play at WVU, joining Brooks and Ohio State transfer Greg Simpson in 1996.
- With a win at Oklahoma State on Dec. 29, 2017, Bob Huggins moved past Jim Phelan on the NCAA Division I winningest coaches list. Huggins’ record now stands at 860-362 in his 37th season as a head coach. He needs 16 more victories to tie Adolph Rupp for seventh place all-time.
