Neal Brown was able to get his first signature win as West Virginia’s head football coach with the Mountaineers’ win over Kansas State. How will this win impact the program as WVU looks to build some sort of momentum for next season?
Following his first start for West Virginia, quarterback Jarret Doege was named Newcomer of the Week by the Big 12 Conference. Doege had 234 yards and three touchdowns in WVU’s win over Kansas State.
West Virginia quarterback Jarret Doege proved himself in his first game starting for the Mountaineers. Although he wouldn’t be able to participate because of his redshirt preservation, could Doege lead WVU to a bowl game appearance?
West Virginia made a change at quarterback and was able to protect the ball in its win over Kansas State. The Mountaineers also improved in the run game and showed resourcefulness on the defensive side.
West Virginia started strong in the Cancun challenge, faltered down the stretch, but was able to pull out the win, 69-61, against Northern Colorado thanks to a great night by Jermaine Haley. Haley had a double-double for WVU with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Big 12 Conference named West Virginia men’s basketball freshman forward Oscar Tshiebwe Newcomer of the Week on Monday. The honor followed WVU’s win over rival Pitt 68-53 last Friday in Pittsburgh.
The West Virginia women’s basketball team is 3-0 and has made it into the Associated Press Poll at #25. #2 Baylor is the only other Big 12 Conference team in the poll.
In front of fans in the southern part of the state, the #25 West Virginia women’s basketball team topped Radford, 74-37, on Sunday afternoon, at the Beckley-Raleigh Convention Center. Redshirt junior guard Kysre Gondrezick led WVU with 22 points.
West Virginia Athletics
The West Virginia men’s soccer team won the MAC Championship for the first time in program history with a 1-0 win over Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers have now made the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row.
The champions of the MAC now know their opponent in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. West Virginia will face Butler of the BIG EAST to kick off its NCAA Tournament run, with a possible meeting with Marshall in the second round.
The #2 West Virginia rifle team earned its second straight win of the weekend with a 4710-4666 victory over #7 NC State on Sunday in Morgantown. This win followed WVU’s victory over #5 Akron on Saturday.
The West Virginia gymnastics team is holding its annual Fall Classic Intrasquad today in Morgantown. Fans are encouraged to attend the intrasquad for their first look at the 2020 Mountaineers.
Senior Etienne Papineau of the West Virginia golf team has been named to the 2020 National Amateur Squad for Team Canada.
West Virginia men’s soccer coach Marlon LeBlanc will be leaving his razor at home when his Mountaineers hit the road for their NCAA Tournament first-round match at Butler. LeBlanc’s beard has lasted as long as his team’s three-match win streak to return to the NCAA Tournament.
West Virginia rifle coach Jon Hammond has announced the addition of four Mountaineers for the 2020-21 season. The newcomers include Tal Engler of the Israel National Team and Virginia state champion shooter Becca Lamb.
Around the Big 12
West Virginia’s Jarret Doege was named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week, Offensive Player of the Week went to Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma State linebacker Kolby Harvell-Peel was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and Iowa State’s Connor Assalley was honored as the Special Teams Player of the Week.
West Virginia’s Oscar Tshiebwe and Oklahoma’s Kristian Doolittle earned their first Big 12 men’s basketball weekly awards. Tshiebwe was recognized as this week’s top newcomer and Doolittle was the conference player of the week.
Baylor guard Te’a Cooper earned her first Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor, while Texas Tech freshman guard Alexis Tucker collected Freshman of the Week after a strong collegiate debut.
Around the NCAA
The ACC, Big 12, and Pac-12 all had four teams in this week’s poll, with all four of the ACC squads coming in the top seven. West Virginia was also receiving votes.
