The Big 12 Conference named West Virginia men’s basketball freshman forward Oscar Tshiebwe Newcomer of the Week on Monday. WVU downed rival Pitt 68-53 last Friday in Pittsburgh.

In 35 minutes, Tshiebwe scored 20 points, nabbed 17 rebounds and blocked three shots, all game highs. He dominated the Panthers all night but was especially powerful in the second half, when the Mountaineers (2-0) held the opposition to just 18 points and 12 percent shooting.
This was his first double-double of his college career.
His performance came after being slightly called out by WVU men’s head coach Bob Huggins after the game against Akron to open the season. Tshiebwe was limited to 12 minutes and only grabbed five rebounds and scored five points.
