West Virginia Mountaineers freshman wide receiver Sam James has been named the Newcomer of the Week after his 14 catch, 223 yard performance against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. James, who consistently got behind the Red Raiders defense, has now won the award twice this season. His 14 catches represent the second most in program history, only behind Kevin White’s 16-catch performance against the Texas Longhorns in 2014. James is now tied with Tavon Austin (14 catches, Baylor Bears, 2012) and Stedman Bailey (14 catches, Oklahoma State Cowboys, 2012) in the record books.
James’ 223 yards receiving yards is the fourth most in program history, behind only Gary Jennings 225 yards against Oklahoma Sooners in 2018 and Stedman Bailey’s 225 yards against Oklahoma State in 2012 and Bailey’s 303 yard performance against Baylor in 2012.
On the 2019 season, James has caught 58 passes for 623 yards and 2 touchdowns.
