Freshman wide receiver Sam James and freshman cornerback Tykee Smith have been named Mid-Season Freshman All-Americans by the Football Writers Association of America. James leads the team in receptions with 41, is second on the team with 388 yards and third on the team with 2 touchdowns. He has also carried the ball four times.

Tykee Smith is only one of two West Virginia Mountaineers with an interception and Smith returned his for a touchdown against Iowa State. Smith has played in all seven games the Mountaineers played but really made the coaches notice after the Texas game. Head coach Neal Brown mentioned Smith by name in his weekly press conference and Smith intercepted Cyclone’s quarterback Brock Purdy the following Saturday.

Smith and James are just two freshman in a laundry list who have played this season and will continue to play as Neal Brown sorts through his roster and finds the pieces needed to head into 2020 with a more complete team.
