I hate to say this, but this West Virginia basketball team is irrevocably broken. The Mountaineers (8-9, 0-5) suffered an embarrassing 98-67 loss to a TCU Horned Frogs (13-3, 2-2) team that battled depth issues of their own tonight in Fort Worth, and it’s all but certain that this team will break the record for worst conference start, set by Gale Catlett’s final squad.
The Horned Frogs opened up a 21-7 lead midway through the first half, and West Virginia was never able to recover.
West Virginia had two players in double figures; James Bolden led the team with 15 points and Wesley Harris finished with 13. Lamont West, Esa Ahmad and Derek Culver each added 8 points and Trey Doomes recorded his first career points, scoring all 7 in the final four minutes of the game.
In an effort to not be completely negative here, I will say that Bob Huggins absolutely deserves a pass for this season and a chance to fix it. How does he do that? Your guess is as good as mine. There is still hope in these freshmen. Trey Doomes worked despite the rest of the team completely giving up at the end. There’s something to be said about that, and I understand why Huggs decided to let him play this season.
West Virginia takes on the No. 7 Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday in Morgantown. That game tips off at 2:00PM EST and will be televised on ESPN.
