The Shotgun/Throwdown (7/9/18): West Virginia finding more success recruiting Georgia

When West Virginia hired Doug Belk, the Mountaineers were turning their focus from south Florida to the state of Georgia, recognizing there was a similar glut of talent, but less drama with the recruits there. Early returns have been positive.

WVU football recruiting: Peach State fruitful for Mountaineers | Charleston Gazette-Mail
Of West Virginia’s seven commitments in the Class of 2019, only the state of Georgia has produced pledges for the Mountaineers – Stone Mountain Stephenson wide receiver Deshon Stoudemire in the spring, and Savannah Memorial Day wide receiver Winston Wright just last week. With the way things are going, though, those two will not be alone in making the trek from The Peach State to the Mountain State.

WVU's Jennings 'different animal' than last season | Charleston Gazette-Mail
WVU wide receiver Gary Jennings smiles widely when the memory is brought up. It was the day he signed to play for the Mountaineers. At first, head coach Dana Holgorsen was nervous he wasn’t going to land the wideout. Then, Holgorsen seemed giddy after he did, beating out suitors like Virginia, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Wisconsin.

Will Grier Website Debuts | West Virginia Athletics
The website Grier7heisman.com is part of West Virginia University's latest effort to promote one of its high-profile football players. Last December, when quarterback Will Grier decided to return to WVU for his senior season, he immediately put himself into contention for the 2018 Heisman Trophy race along with Stanford running back Bryce Love, Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor and Central Florida quarterback McKenzie Milton.

So far, so good for Will Grier's Heisman website | EerSports
Will Grier's propaganda machine has been up and running for more than a day now. So far, the returns are predictably positive, and West Virginia's point has been made: The senior quarterback is very much in the conversation, which is all that really matters in July.

Is 2018 the Record-Breaking Year for Eers in the NFL? | EerSports
Four years ago, EerSports detailed the sudden rise in NFL talent coming out of Morgantown. Things were at a nearly three-decade low in 2010 with only nine Mountaineers playing on Sunday. By 2013, that number was up to 17, and I predicted two seasons ago that the record of 22 - set in 2003 - would be broken. I reiterated that prediction for 2017, too. Yet, both years, the Mountaineers in the NFL came up just short, with only 21 former WVU stars officially registering an NFL snap in each season.
