West Virginia Shuts Down Marshall, Advances To Second Consecutive Sweet Sixteen

THAT WAS FUN

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Second Round-West Virginia vs Marshall Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The No. 5 seed West Virginia Mountaineers are moving on to the Sweet Sixteen for the second year in a row after a dominating 94-71 win over the No. 13 seed Marshall Thundering Herd.

Marshall looked as though they stood a chance early on in the game, sinking three straight threes to jump out to a quick 9-2 lead.

And that was about it for the Herd.

The Mountaineers took a 21-20 lead off a Lamont West three midway through the first half, and it was off to the races. Marshall’s Jon Elmore - who crowned himself “one of the best offensive players” earlier this weekend - committed 6 turnovers in a 10 minute span and finished the first half with just 3 points, as West Virginia went into the locker room with a 42-25 lead.

The second half turned into a snuff film right away, and I’ll be completely honest that I missed most of it because I was just outright cackling.

Jevon Carter lead the Mountaineers with 28 points, 5 assists, 4 steals and 4 rebounds. Lamont West broke out of his slump and finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. James Bolden added 11 points off the bench, and Esa Ahmad finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists.

The Mountaineers will take on the No. 1 seed Villanova Wildcats on Friday in Boston, Massachusetts. That game will tip at 7:27PM Eastern and will be televised on TBS.
