Both the West Virginia men’s and women’s basketball teams will travel to Cancun, Mexico, to play in the 2019 Cancun Challenge. The exact dates and details of all the games will announced in 2019 but bracket play for the men will be Nov. 27-29 and Nov. 28-30 for the women.
The men will be joined by Northern Iowa, South Carolina and Wichita State in the Riviera Division of the tournament. Each team will play twice in bracket play in Cancun and will host two Mayan Division teams in the U.S. on dates that are TBA.
Two Mayan Division have been announced, Gardner Webb and Tennessee-Martin, and two will be announced later.
WVU’s women’s team will be joined by Creighton, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Notre Dame, South Dakota State, South Florida and Temple. The teams will play either two or three games, depending on the division they’re given.
All the teams stay and play at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya during the tournament. The convention center ballroom is turned into a basketball arena for the teams and fans to experience an intimate atmosphere.
This year’s tournament is exclusively broadcast on CBS Sports Network. The men’s teams include SMU, Bradley, Penn State, Wright State, North Florida, Southern Miss., Western Carolina and Jacksonville State. Women’s teams include Kansas State, Princeton, Syracuse, DePaul, George Washington, Georgia Tech, Idaho State, Kennesaw State, Michigan State and N.C. State.
