It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win.
The West Virginia Mountaineers (1-1) turned in another sloppy performance while committing 18 turnovers, but managed to put together a 30-14 run in the final 15 minutes of the game to go on to a 71-53 win over the Monmouth Hawks (0-4) in the last Myrtle Beach Invitational quarterfinal of the day.
Esa Ahmad led the way for the Mountaineers with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Sagaba Konate added 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 assists. For those playing along at home, Konate was 1-for-5 from beyond the arc tonight, bringing his season total to 4 made threes on 9 attempts.
James Bolden and Jordan McCabe each contributed 9 points and 3 rebounds, with Bolden adding 2 steals to his stat line. McCabe played well in his 16 minutes on the court, and looks as though he may be Bob Huggins’ go-to guard off the bench.
The Mountaineers will move on to play the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers tomorrow night at 9:00PM on ESPNU. The Hilltoppers (2-1) knocked off the Valparaiso Crusaders earlier this evening, 83-71, to advance.
