The West Virginia Mountaineers picked up their first win of the season this afternoon in Morgantown on the back of a 56-20 blowout of the East Carolina Pirates. Dana Holgorsen remains undefeated in home openers, and the Mountaineers posted their highest scoring half in the Holgorsen era, going in at the break with a 49-3 lead.
Junior quarterback Will Grier had another great showing, completing 19-of-25 passes (76%) for 352 yards and five touchdowns in just under three quarters of playing time. Former quarterback-turned-wide receiver David Sills was on the receiving end of three of those touchdown passes, and finished with seven total catches for 153 yards. Ka’Raun White and the returning Marcus Simms also hauled in a touchdown each. Justin Crawford led the way for the Mountaineers on the ground with 118 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Kennedy McKoy added another touchdown and 54 yards on the ground off of 11 carries.
Kyzir White is now tied for the lead in interceptions on the season, after stealing two away from the Pirates this afternoon.
The Mountaineers will have another easy game next week against the FCS Delaware State Hornets. That game is another noon kick, and will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh (the former Root Sports).
