Thanks to their convincing win over then #2 Ohio State Buckeyes, the Oklahoma Sooners have jumped all the way to #2 in the latest AP Poll. The Alabama Crimson Tide remain the number one team in the land, though some pollsters are actually convinced that Nick Saban’s death squad might be the #2 team.

The Buckeyes, following the planting of the Oklahoma Sooners flag on their 50-yard line, fall all the way to #8. They are the biggest drop of the week. Stanford, who entered the week looking to challenge Southern California for Pac-12 supremacy, fell 42-24 to the Trojans.

In my tin foil hat conspiracy theory of the week, Notre Dame jumped up to #24 in last week’s poll. Now the Georgia Bulldogs have one more “win over a ranked non-conference foe”. Georgia may be good, but did anyone really think Notre Dame was the 24th best team in the land?

As for the West Virginia Mountaineers, they lost votes this week. Last week, following their primetime matchup with Virginia Tech, the Mountaineers had 70 votes. This week they fell to 63 votes.

The Coaches Poll offers little difference to the AP. Alabama is still the top dawg in the poll with all but two voters believing the Crimson Tide are the best team in the land. Two voters think Dabo Sweeney’s Clemson Tigers could challenge Nick Saban, as they did last year. Oklahoma comes in at 3, with USC at 4 and the Penn State Nittany Lions falling one spot to #5.

The Florida Gators are clinging to life as a ranked team at #25. Due to Hurricane Irma, all of the games scheduled in Florida were cancelled. Should Florida lose next week, or show up with their JV offense again, the Mountaineers, who have the most votes of any non-ranked team, could take the Gators place in the rankings.

As for the Big 12, four teams are ranked. The aforementioned Sooners at #2/#3. The Oklahoma State Cowboys are #9 in the AP, #8 in the Coaches. The Kansas State Wildcats are 18th in both polls after convincing wins over weak opponents.

Gary Patterson’s TCU Horned Frogs are 20th in both polls following their 28-7 smothering of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
