For the first time in program history, West Virginia’s women’s soccer will start the year ranked at number one in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Ranking. The Mountaineers, led by coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, earned a number one ranking last year and held the spot for 8 weeks.
The Mountaineers qualified for their first NCAA College Cup and lost to USC 3-1 in the championship game.
Rounding out the top 5: Stanford at #2, followed by reigning national champion USC at #3. South Carolina is #4 and Georgetown is at #5. The Mountaineers open the season against Georgetown on Friday August 18.
Overall, four of West Virginia’s 2017 opponents are ranked in the preseason poll: Virginia at #1, Duke at #12, and Oklahoma at #16.
Fifteen letter winners return to the team, including nine starters. 2016 NSCAA All-America Second Team honoree Micaela Abam helped pace WVU with a career high 33 points which was 24th nationally.
Update: Not only has the women’s team achieved its first number one ranking, it becomes the first Big 12 team to be ranked #1 in the preseason polls. Way to go!
