TopDrawerSoccer.com named two WVU women’s soccer players in their Women’s D1 Preseason Top 100. Senior forward Michaela Abam made the first-team Best XI and senior midfielder Carla Portillo is on the third-team Best XI.
Abam was ranked the sixth-best player in D1 women’s soccer by TDS. The Sugarland, Texas, native is racking up the preseason accolades; she was named to the Hermann Award watch list, a unanimous Preseason All-Big 12 Team selection and is now tabbed as one of the best players in the country by TDS. The senior forward will look to continue her scoring prowess from last season, when she led the Big 12 in goals (12) and points (33).
Continuing the trend of top-class Canadians playing in Morgantown, Portillo also finds herself on the preseason third-team Best XI. She was ranked No. 66 on last the 2016 list and rose to No. 24 this year. Portillo was also a preseason all-conference selection after being selected to the NSCAA All-Central Region Second Team and All-Big 12 First Team last season.
WVU dusted off Michigan in their first preseason exhibition, 2-1, and downed Bowling Green at home, 3-1. The Mountaineers start their quest for redemption on this Friday, August 18, with a road match at Georgetown at 4 p.m.
