West Virginia Suspends Wide Receiver Marcus Simms

Head coach Dana Holgorsen has shown he’s tough but fair with his players

NCAA Football: Baylor at West Virginia Ben Queen-USA TODAY Sports

West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen released a statement on wide receiver Marcus Simms earlier today. According to the university, Simms has been suspended for the Mountaineers opening night game against the Virginia Tech Hokies on September 3rd.

We have very high expectations for our student athletes and they know that how we represent this university is more important than their contributions on the field. While every case is unique and discipline imposed is based on varying factors, this suspension is warranted. It is my hope that Marcus works hard to fulfill his obligation as a member of our community and as a member of our football team. - Dana Holgorsen

Simms was arrested and charged with his second DUI early Sunday morning. He was found to be driving with a revoked license stemming from his first DUI which occurred this May. According to the arrest report, Simms was pulled over by a Monongalia County sherrif’s deputy who “smelled marijuana inside the vehicle” and noted that Simms’ eyes appeared to be “bloodshot and glassy”. Simms failed a field sobriety test.
