West Virginia quarterback Cody Saunders no longer playing football

The redshirt Freshman has been forced to retire due to a medical issue.

According to Mike Casazza, of the Charleston Gazette-Mail, West Virginia backup quarterback Cody Saunders has been forced to end his football career due to a medical issue.

After a fairly impressive 2016 Spring game at The Greenbrier, Saunders redshirted last season. Most expected Saunders to compete with Chris Chugunov for the backup role leading into this coming season, but Saunders was notably absent from the 2017 Spring game in April.

The Mountaineers are now left with an empty seat in the quarterback room, which may end up being filled by University of Miami transfer Jack Allison.

We want to wish Cody the best of luck with whatever medical issue he’s currently facing. Remember, once a Mountaineer, always a Mountaineer.

And you’ll always be our large adult son.
