David Sills and Ka’Raun White will attempt to become the second and third West Virginia Mountaineers this season to break 1,000 receiving yards this season in the last uniform combination of the season. West Virginia will wear the gold/blue/gold for the third time in this uniform iteration and this combination has been good to the Mountaineers.
This combination first debuted in 2013 against FBS foe Georgia State. While the 2013 season was extremely forgettable overall, the Georgia State game saw the emergence of Ford Childress. Childress set the freshman West Virginia passing record with 359 yards. Childress’ time with the Mountaineers would be short-lived as he tore a pectoral muscle the next week against Maryland and never played again.
The second time the Mountaineers wore this combination was against Maryland in 2014. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 28-6 lead before typical West Virginia things happened. CJ Brown completed a pass to current Minnesota Viking Stefon Diggs for a 77-yard touchdown. Another long touchdown before the half and then a CJ Brown run to begin the second half turned a rout into a nailbiter. Eventually, with the game tied at 37, the Mountaineers executed the perfect two-minute drive and Josh Lambert, who Dana Holgorsen once joked he didn’t even know his name, nailed a 47-yard field goal to win the game.
