The Jimmy V Classic, which honors the late NC State coach Jim Valvano who’s 1983 squad shocked the nation and won the National Championship. Valvano was diagnosed with metastatic adenocarcinoma, a glanduar cancer that can spread to the bones. He gave his memorable speech at the 1993 ESPN ESPY Awards where he told the crowd “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up”.
ESPN organized the basketball doubleheader beginning in 1995 to honor the late coach. The game which features four hand selected teams was originally played in the Meadowlands Arena before moving to Madison Square Garden in 2003.
West Virginia has played in the Jimmy V Classic twice before but has never won. The first game was against Davidson Wildcats in 2008. The second time was two years ago in 2015 against the Virginia Cavaliers.
