The West Virginia Mountaineers once again find themselves ranked in the AP Poll, coming in at number 23. The Mountaineers have bounced in and out of the rankings, never rising above #22 where they started the season. The Mountaineers have been on the short end of the draw, having already faced five ranked teams through 9 weeks.
To start the season, the Mountaineers faced the Virginia Tech Hokies in a “neutral” site home opener and lost 31-24, dropping from the rankings. After showcasing a Sugar Free Red Bull fueled offense in weeks 2-4, the Mountaineers were once again in the rankings, this time at #23.
Unfortunately for the Mountaineers this new ranking coincided with their ESPN Gameday trip to Dallas/Ft. Worth to take on the TCU Horned Frogs, which the Mountaineers lost 31-24. For the second time the Mountaineers were dropped from the rankings after a close loss to a higher ranked foe.
This time fate shined on the Mountaineers, giving them a chance to earn their first win over a ranked team as the Texas Tech Red Raiders traveled to Morgantown and left unranked. West Virginia re-entered the polls again at #23.
They would earn their first win as a ranked team in 2017 over the Baylor Bears before facing their fourth ranked team of the season. This time the Mountaineers did not show up and lost to the Oklahoma State Cowboys 50-39 for the third defeat this season.
The Mountaineers fifth game against a ranked team went for the good guys and West Virginia held on against a scrappy Iowa St. Cyclone team 20-16. The Mountaineers are once again ranked 23 in the AP Poll and will take on the Kansas State Wildcats in Manhattan on Saturday. Here’s to rising above #22!
West Virginia is not ranked in the Coaches Poll. The Mountaineers are the highest unranked team, receiving 120 votes. #25 LSU received 136 votes.
