File this one under news that really doesn’t mean a thing, but Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield will start Saturday’s game against West Virginia on the sideline. Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley announced this afternoon that Mayfield will not serve as a team captain and, although he will play in the game, will not start against the Mountaineers because of his antics in Saturday’s game against the Kansas Jayhawks. Texas A&M transfer Kyler Murray, a former five-star recruit, will get the start for the Sooners.
West Virginia, of course, will rely on backup quarterback Chris Chugunov in Norman. Chugunov stepped in for the Mountaineers on Saturday after starting quarterback Will Grier left the game with a broken metacarpal on his throwing hand. Grier underwent surgery on Sunday in Charlotte, NC, and recovery time is expected to be 4-6 weeks. Grier’s status for West Virginia’s bowl game is in doubt, but he likely won’t be ruled out until the week of practices leading up to the game.
The betting line for Saturday’s matchup between the Mountaineers and the Sooners opened with Oklahoma as a 22 point favorite.
