West Virginia Football Recruiting: Martinsburg standout Tavis Lee gives his commitment to the Mountaineers

A one time perceived weakness in WVU recruiting, the Mountaineers seem to now be keeping in-state stars at home.

Martinsburg (WV) edge rusher Tavis Lee committed to the West Virginia Mountaineers earlier this afternoon, giving the Dana Holgorsen and company their 20th verbal commitment of the 2018 recruiting class.

Lee has flown under the radar in his recruiting, only holding offers from Marshall, Albany and Delaware before the Mountaineers extended a scholarship offer just under two weeks ago. Tavis camped at West Virginia during the summer and caught the staff’s attention with his performance, and they continued to monitor his performance throughout his senior season at Martinsburgh High School.

Lee fits into that “project athlete” mold that I think we’ve seen West Virginia capitalize on numerous times. Tavis will most likely redshirt the 2018 season and be asked to add a significant amount of weight to his frame to make himself an effective edge rusher for the Mountaineers. If all goes according to plan, I think we will see Lee play in that defensive end/linebacker role in which we saw Bruce Irvin excel.

Height: 6’ 3’’

Big 3 Ratings:

Tavis is currently unranked by the major recruiting services, but is expected to be evaluated in the near future. I expect Tavis to fall into the mid-three star range.
