The only time this combination has been worn was when Dana Holgorsen had the team wear the old school WVU helmets that the team wore from 1970 through the 1979 season. Before West Virginia went to the iconic “Flying WV” these helmets with the state outline in blue with an old gold football and blue W-V-U on the side were the school symbol. This wasn’t the first time the Mountaineers wore the helmets but this game in 2014 against Kansas State made it a tradition. The Mountaineers have worn some version of the helmet every year.
Hopefully the second time this combination is worn will result in a win. The first time, against Kansas State in 2014, didn’t go so well as the Wildcats pulled out a 26-20 win in Morgantown. The game is best remembered as Clint Trickett’s last collegiate game and the start of the Skyler Howard era.
This could be the chance for the Mountaineers to wear the old school helmets but right now it isn’t known. Either way, this is a rock solid look for the Mountaineers. The white and blue are great contrasts and will help offset the awful Iowa State red.
