Pick’Em Gauntlet: Week Six Results And Texas Tech Predictions

New, 1 comment

We’ve got a couple contestants trying to run away with the competition. It’s not too late to get in and make your push to the top of the leaderboard.

The Smoking Musket Pick ‘Em Gauntlet is an online college pick ‘em game where we will try to pick the winners of the weekly Big 12 contests plus Yahoo! editors' selected games (usually the games involving the top 25 teams). We do pick against the spread (when available). There are usually 20-30 games to pick each week and each correct pick is worth one point. The winner (excluding Musket staff) will be the person at the end of the regular season who has the most correct picks/points. Points are cumulative, so don't worry if you happen to miss a week or two. We will award the winner a WVU Nike T-shirt at the conclusion of the games in December.

All participants are subject to the Official Rules as determined by SB Nation.

Our game, as in the past, will be hosted by Yahoo! Fantasy. GAME LINK

Our first Pick'Em Gauntlet group has filled up but don't worry, we've set up a second group for those who haven't joined yet. People in the second group will still be competing against those in the first group.

We have 27 games to pick this week, starting with Clemson vs. Syracuse tonight at 7:30PM ET and continuing through Pac12 After Dark on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Deadline for each pick is 5 minutes before kickoff.

Here are the leaders after week 6. Congratulations to bitcruncher winning the week with 19 correct picks (all you win for this is kudos).

WVUNite’s prediction last week was the closest to being correct, so we’re letting him start the festivities this week.

Gibby is mad that we didn't create any turnovers against TCU. Dana is pissed that the refs found ways to snatch victory from us. Texas Tech has an improved defense. Just because you used to be league worst, doesn't mean you are good. Will Grier and company win this and let the Big 12 know they aren't going away anytime soon.

I still like our offense vs. the defenses we'll see the rest of the season. Our defense is fine. It's a matter of whether or not we get out of our own way. There's a measure of redemption on the line this week too.

Tech's improved defense will make a few plays, but Tony Gibson's guys will make a few more and pressure will rattle Shimonek. Will Grier has a field day downfield off of playaction.

WVU has a more reliable run game but our defense needs to play big again to control an improved Tech offense.

Last week sucks and still sucks and will likely suck in perpetuity for a long while. Outplaying a top-10 team on their home field and still coming out with the L should haunt this team as much as it does this writer. Thinking positively, however, I like what the TCU loss might do to this team moving forward. "Galvanize" is the operative term here, going into a homecoming match up against the Red Raiders. While Tech is playing well on both sides of the ball, they've yet to relinquish fewer than 425 yards in any of their contests, up to this point. WVU has proven that it can move the ball at will and that Tony Gibson's defense is not willing to be complacent. I think a home crowd and the residual sting from what happened in Fort Worth will be jet fuel in the Will Grier machine this Saturday. I predict points, I predict helmet feathers, I predict musket smoke and that much-needed win over a ranked opponent.

You can't come up short in this game. Special teams need to redeem themselves. And lordy, we could use a big day from the running game.

I predict West Virginia will come back fired up after last week and the homecoming crowd will be even more fired up. I think WVU will hop out to an early lead and Texas Tech will come back to make it an interesting fourth quarter. I predict the Mountaineers will get back on a winning streak this week.

WVU finally beats a ranked team for the first time in a long time with a solid nooner effort - one of the few things that has been consistent over the last few years. Noon kickoffs at WVU are the new night games. Up is down. Black is White.

West Virginia 41 - Texas Tech 30

Dan Thomas

After a heartbreaking loss to TCU last weekend, WVU bounces back with a come from behind win over Texas Tech.

I’ll be completely honest here. This game terrifies me. Maybe more so than the TCU game did, but for completely different reasons. Last week, we were expected to lose. We we went into Fort Worth ready to knock off a Top 10 team, but all knew that a loss to TCU wouldn’t be the end of the world.

This week, we’re facing a Texas Tech team that has shown pretty significant improvement compared to the last couple seasons. They’re ranked, and we know all about the Mountaineer’s struggles against ranked teams over the last few years. This game is what stands between an 8-4/9-3 season and a 6-6 season. The stakes in this one are just as high, if not higher, than last week.

Will the Mountaineers be able to shake off the heartbreak from Fort Worth? Will we come out ready to play at Noon, or will we sleep walk through the first half and have to play catch up again?

My gut says this is another close one, but we finally get that pesky ‘ranked opponent’ monkey off our backs this weekend. We’ll be on the edge of our seats again, but this time we’ll be the ones celebrating after the clock hits zero.

WVU breaks its streak of losses to ranked teams against the Red Raiders. Grier extends his 300+ yard passing streak to six. The Mountaineer defense bows up against Texas Tech’s surprisingly great rushing attack and leaves no doubt.

Jordan Pinto

A bit of a tricky one this week as we look to rebound from TCU. It's hard to know for sure, but Texas Tech seems like they're a good bit better than people thought they'd be.

I expect Will and Co to do their thing against Tech's 124th-ranked pass D while the defense builds off last week to slow them down just enough to get the W.
