West Virginia athletics is in full swing as October approaches, and while football is the primary focus for most fans, there are many other additional sporting events for Mountaineers to look forward to this month. Here are the top five games for WVU fans to look forward to in October:
Honorable Mentions: Men’s Basketball Gold-Blue Debut (October 27) and Football vs. Texas Tech (October 14)
Many Mountaineer fans will be very eager to see how this year’s basketball team looks before the season begins. The Gold-Blue intrasquad scrimmage will be back in the WVU Coliseum on October 27. Fans planning on spending the weekend in Morgantown for the football game that weekend should plan to see how “Press Virginia” is looking that Friday.
The second honorable mention is the football game against Texas Tech on October 14. The game has a lot to offer for Mountaineer fans. It will be the first home football game in roughly a month, and it is the Homecoming game. Texas Tech nearly upset Oklahoma State last night. If the Red Raiders continue playing well and find their way into the top 25, this game could be one of the premiere games of the month.
5. Men’s Soccer vs. Western Michigan (October 20)
The West Virginia men’s soccer team is having a solid season. The month of September had a few rough games, but the Mountaineers are still receiving votes to be ranked nationally. This matchup with Western Michigan in late October is a huge game for West Virginia. Western Michigan is one of the leading teams in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and has only suffered one loss this season. They are also currently ranked in the top 10 nationally. A win over the Broncos at home could be great for the Mountaineers’ confidence as the conference tournament approaches.
4. Women’s Soccer vs. Oklahoma State (October 6)
The West Virginia women’s soccer team is looking to make another run at a championship this season. Despite a few losses this year, the Mountaineers are still one of the best teams in the nation and are currently ranked ninth in the Coaches’ Poll. As the Mountaineers look to defend their Big 12 title, Oklahoma State might be one of the teams standing in their way. Oklahoma State has been moving up the rankings with their impressive record, and they could be the team the Mountaineers have to overcome in order to defend their conference title. This match between two top 25 teams should be the biggest game of the month for the West Virginia women’s soccer team.
3. Football vs. Oklahoma State (October 28)
This football matchup with Oklahoma State is one that many Mountaineer fans have had circled on their calendars for months. It will be a game between two incredibly talented quarterbacks and two coaches with unique personalities. Despite Oklahoma State’s surprising loss to TCU, this game should be the biggest football game in Morgantown in October. The Cowboys are still ranked in the top 15, and if both teams continue to win leading up to this matchup, it could be a battle between two highly ranked teams. This game could also be very important in the conference standings as the season progresses.
2. Men’s Soccer vs. Michigan State (October 11)
The men’s soccer team has an even bigger matchup than the previously discussed game against Western Michigan. The biggest match of the month should be when West Virginia hosts Michigan State. The Spartans are currently ranked fourth in the nation, and they are also receiving votes to be the top team in the country. This matchup is not only the biggest one of the month for the Mountaineers, but this could also be the biggest game of the regular season. A win over Michigan State would prove that this West Virginia team has what it takes to make a run in the post season.
1. Football at TCU (October 7)
Mountaineer fans will be ready to go after enduring a bye week, and hopefully the football team will be, too. TCU has sprung into the national spotlight after continuing to be undefeated with an impressive win at Oklahoma State. The Horned Frogs will also endure a bye week before this game, so it should be an electric atmosphere in Fort Worth when the Mountaineers come to town. West Virginia will really need to bring their best effort as they face a top 10 opponent. It will likely take all four quarters to beat this dynamic TCU team. This game could potentially be the only game of the week between two top 25 teams, which means college football fans will be tuning in to see this Big 12 battle. The bye week also gives both teams extra time to rest and prepare for each other, so this game between two nationally ranked teams should be the biggest game for West Virginia athletics this month.
October is full of many notable games for Mountaineer fans. Some West Virginia teams are getting into the crucial parts of their schedule, while others are just getting the seasons started. Either way, October should be an exciting month for Mountaineer fans.
