In the January 9, 2017, edition of The AP Men’s Basketball Top 25 Poll, West Virginia slipped to No. 10. This is a three-spot fall from their ranking last week.
This release puts the Mountaineers (13-2, 2-1) against a No. 1-ranked team this Tuesday, as the Baylor Bears (15-0, 3-0) come to Morgantown for a 7 p.m. tip at the WVU Coliseum.
Other Big 12 teams in the AP Top 25 are Kansas, which rose to No. 2, and Kansas State, making an appearance tied for the 25th spot. The Mountaineers will travel to the Wildcats on Saturday, January 21 and host the Jayhawks on Tuesday, January 24.
- Baylor, 15-0
- Kansas, 14-1
- Villanova, 15-1
- UCLA, 16-1
- Gonzaga, 15-0
- Kentucky, 13-2
- Duke, 14-2
- Creighton, 15-1
- Florida State, 15-1
- West Virginia, 13-2
Baylor moved to the top spot by virtue of defeating Iowa State and Oklahoma State last week and former No. 1 Villanova (now No. 3) falling to (now) No. 12 Butler.
This will be the second meeting with a top-ranked team in as many years for the Mountaineers. Last year, WVU defeated then-No. 1 Kansas 74-63 in a snow-covered Morgantown.
UPDATE:
WVU also dropped in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Mountaineers are now No. 9, just a two-position decline. Baylor is No. 1 and Kansas is No. 2 in the Coaches Poll while Kansas State is just outside the top 25.
