Through two games and 70 passes, West Virginia hasn’t allowed a sack. This is commendable for both obvious and obscure reasons. A season ago, the Mountaineers played one game without allowing a sack. In all, they surrendered 32. Thirty teams managed to do worse.

The talk started publicly back when West Virginia football coach Dana Holgorsen announced he was bringing Joe Wickline in as offensive coordinator and to give offensive line coach Ron Crook a second pair of eyes and a bit of different philosophy on how to approach both pass protection and run blocking. Privately, though, you can bet it started before Holgorsen even interviewed Wickline, for Holgorsen obviously felt after an 8-5 season in which his pass protection was dismal, things would have to change.
