West Virginia defensive coordinator Tony Gibson ready to fine tune his defense

Tony Gibson and the defensive staff have spent the first part of camp establishing their depth chart, and now they're ready to establish quality control for his overall product.

During two physical midweek practices, West Virginia defensive coordinator Tony Gibson and his staff established the first meaningful depth chart of camp in advance of Saturday's scrimmage. Distilling position races was the initial step. Now Gibson wants to establish quality control for his overall product.

The Ferns Brothers seem to be enjoying camp. While blue-chip freshman Brendan Ferns laid quick claim to the backup spot at Mike linebacker, older brother Michael seized an opportunity at fullback following Eli Wellman's ankle injury.

West Virginia Athletics:

A conference-best four players from the No. 6-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer, including three unanimous selections, were named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Soccer Team.

West Virginia University sophomore Ginny Thrasher came up just short in her quest for a second straight Olympic finals appearance, placing 11th Thursday in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games' women's 50m rifle 3 positions competition.

The West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and IMG today announced that Dan Zangrilli has joined the IMG Mountaineer Sports Network broadcast team as the assistant director of broadcasting.

ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported Friday that the Big 12 will discuss expansion with 17 prospective new members who have signaled their interest in joining. McMurphy's got sources saying it's "becoming less and less likely" that the Big 12 expands by four, leaving two-team expansion as the likeliest addition size.

ESPN ranked the top 10 quarterbacks in the Big 12 heading into the regular season and Oklahoma Sooner star Baker Mayfield leads the way. West Virginia's Skyler Howard comes in at No. 6.

A lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court claims Kansas University compelled its female rowers to attend Jayhawk football games. This included athletes who'd reported assaults by Kansas football players.
