Not all recruiting updates are about the 2017 or 2018 class. Sometimes you get a surprise with the current class. Such a surprise surfaced last night when JUCO defensive end Brandon Lawless agreed to join the Mountaineers for fall camp.
Brandon graduated from high school academically eligible for football but he failed to receive a FBS scholarship offer. Lawless chose to go the JUCO route in order to improve his stocks.
That decision paid off as Brandon grew two inches and put on 35 pounds over his freshman year. Now standing at 6’-4" and 260 pounds, Brandon projects as a field side defensive end or a stand up rush linebacker. Defensive coordinator Tony Gibson has to be salivating at the thought of another pass rusher to send after the Big 12 quarterbacks.
Defensive line coach Bruce Tall first caught sight of Lawless after he posted 35 tackles and 7.5 sacks during his freshman year at Santa Monica College. Lawless is set to enroll next month in August. He will have four remaining years to play three at WVU.
They're bringing me in so I can report for fall camp. It's a huge blessing. I'm lost for words. It's a great opportunity at a power five school. It's a great conference in the Big 12 and West Virginia does well every year playing great competition. It's something I've always wanted as a kid. A lot of people told me when I was offered by New Mexico State and Wyoming to take it because I wouldn't get any more but I had to stay patient. -
