The 2017 West Virginia Mountaineers football schedule has been finalized. The Mountaineers had one out of conference game that needed to be filled. Athletic Director Shane Lyons finalized a deal that will see Delaware State Hornets travel to Morgantown.

The 2017 schedule opens with a neutral site tussel with rival Virginia Tech for the Black Diamond Trophy. The Mountaineers and Hokies last played October 1, 2005. The Hokies won the game 34-17.

After the Hokies, West Virginia will host the East Carolina Pirates the following Saturday, September 9 in Morgantown. The Mountaineers have played ECU 21 times since the series first started in 1970. The Pirates have beaten the Mountaineers 3 times but never in Morgantown.

The final game of the out of conference schedule will be against the Delaware State Hornets on September 16. The Hornets, who play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, were No. 245 among 253 teams in the RPI rankings last season with a 1-10 record after finishing 2-10 in 2014. The only win for the Hornets was a 31-30 victory of 1-10 Howard.
