The West Virginia Mountaineers failed to advance to the NCAA Round of 32 after being chopped down by the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The Lumberjacks beat the Mountaineers at their own game, capitalizing off of turnovers and going on to win 70-56.
After jumping out to an early 20-11 lead, West Virginia turned the ball over 6 straight times and a sloppy first half put the Mountaineers down 31-28 at the break. Stephen F. Austin scored 18 points off of twelve West Virginia turnovers, and out scored the Mountaineers at the free throw line going 12-of-19 compared to West Virginia's 7-of-8.
The second half began with more of the same from West Virginia, with the Lumberjacks out hustling the Mountaineers and jumping out to a quick 7-0 run and opening up a 10 point lead with just under 17 minutes remaining. West Virginia cut that lead to 3 with 9:30 left on the clock, but that wouldn't last long as Stephen F. Austin opened their largest lead of the night at the 6 minute mark with a 58-47 lead and they didn't stop there.
Stephen F. Austin finished out the game with 28 points off of 22 Mountaineer turnovers, compared to West Virginia's 4 points off of 7 turnovers.
The Mountaineers were lead by Devin Williams with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Esa Ahmad was the only other Mountaineer in double figures with 10 points. The Lumberjacks were lead by Thomas Walkup, who may or may not be Stephen F. Austin's mascot, with 33 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.
