West Virginia Mountaineers Vs. Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers Preview - Season 108 Episode 1: The One With The Identical Mascot

Time to get a first peek of what we have

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

I know the beginning of the basketball season is always in the middle of football fever, but Mountaineer Nation has some excitement surrounding the basketball program for this season.

Since the early exit of the NCAA Tournament back in March, I think everyone has forgotten how good the Mountaineer basketball team could be. Last year’s team defeated top-ranked Kansas during a blizzard. They defeated Iowa State in Ames. They also made their first-ever championship game run in the Big 12 Tournament. Oh yeah and this happened:

This season also comes with a few questions. Will Nathan Adrian fill Devin Williams’ role? Who will fill Jaysean Paige’s role as the sixth man? How good is this team without them? Will this season be anything like last season? The honest truth, is that nobody will know until we see them play.

Friday’s game will obviously not answer any of those questions right away, but it’s an opportunity at a first glimpse at what us WVU fans can expect.

If nothing else, it’s an opportunity to get a look at the newly-renovated Coliseum and it’s something to watch while we’re waiting for WVU football Saturdays.

  • Shake off the SFA loss, but don’t rest on last season’s laurels either. This is a given, but it is still worth noting. Starting off stale against a team like this would set a horrible tone for the season
  • Keep an eye on Junior Robinson for Mount St. Mary’s. This guy just about always scores in double figures and has seen time in every game he’s played while during his career in Emmitsburg.

I would say 1. Mount St. Mary’s is a young team coming off an already unimpressive record. I’m about as afraid of MSM as I am of Ralph Wiggum.

I think that WVU will start off just a little bit sow in the first ten minutes. I think it’s possible within those first ten minutes, West Virginia will only be up by 8 or 9. Bob Huggins will eventually light a fire under the team and will win by 30+. I think at one point or another the Mountaineers will win one of these gimmes by less than ten, but I don’t think this is the one.
