With the release of the AP and Coaches Poll rankings, tomorrow's matchup between the Kansas Jayhawks and the West Virginia Mountaineers will feature a pair of Top Ten teams. Over 650+ games played at the Coliseum, only 6 have ever featured the #1 team in the country. The Mountaineers are 1-4 all time against the #1 team in Morgantown with the win coming against the first #1 team to play in the Coliseum, the UNLV Running Rebels in 1983. West Virgina ambushed the Rebels 87-78.

The other #1 teams to play at the Coliseum were: Temple in 1988, UMass in 1995, UConn in 1999 and UConn again in 2006. The '95 loss to UMass remains one of the biggest games the Mountaineers have let get away from them. Despite leading UMass by as much as 18 with less than 5 minutes left to play, the Mountaineers fell to the Minutemen 97-94 in overtime.

Despite playing five #1 teams, only one has won the national title at the end of the year, the 1999 UConn Huskies. The 2006 Huskies, UMass in 1995 and Temple in 1988 all made it to the Elite 8 but lost. UNLV was upset in the first round as a 3-seed against #6 NC State, who under the leadership of Jim Valvano would go on to win the National Championship.
