The 2005 season was full of surprises. From the triple overtime comeback victory against Louisville, to the emergence of Pat White and Steve Slaton, to the team capturing the Big East Championship and the precious BCS berth that came with it, the season was more than anyone could have expected. The trend of unexpectedness continued straight through to the Sugar Bowl where the Mountaineers jumped out to an early 28-0 lead against the heavily favored SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs. The shellshocked Georgia team eventually settled in and stormed back into the game closing the gap to just 3 points. With just under 2 minutes left the Bulldogs had stopped the Mountaineers on third down and were poised to get the ball back for a potential game winning or tying drive. That's when the Mountaineer coaching staff decided to pull out one last surprise and Phil Brady did his best Runaway Beer Truck impression to close out the victory with a perfectly executed fake punt giving the Mountaineers the first of three BCS victories.
