Mario Alford: West Virginia Wide Receiver - 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report

A look at Mario Alford leading up to the NFL Draft

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Somewhat lost in the excitement surrounding Kevin White's ascension into the upper echelon of draft prospects is the draft potential of WVU's other explosive wide receiver Mario Alford.

Like White, Alford experienced a breakout season in 2014. In his first season with the Mountaineers Alford had 27 receptions for 552 yards and 2 touchdowns. In his second and last season with the Mountaineers Alford more than doubled his receptions to 65, and nearly broke the 1,000 yard mark with 945 yards receiving. Most striking though was the jump from two receiving touchdowns in 2013 to eleven receiving touchdowns in 2014. Those eleven touchdowns were good enough to tie for first in Big 12 touchdown receptions. In addition, Alford added 743 yards and two touchdowns on kick returns in 2014 including a spectacular kick return for a touchdown against Alabama in the Chic-Fil-A Kick Off Classic. His play as a kick returner earned him All American honors.

Alford stands at 5'8" and weighs in at 180lbs. During their time in Morgantown Alford was known more for his speed than White, but at the NFL combine White ran an eye opening 4.35 40 while Alford ran a pedestrian, for him, 4.43 40. However, Alford made amends at WVU's Pro Day where he ran a blazing 4.27 40. Most recently Alford had a private workout with the Atlanta Falcons. Alford is projected as mid round draft pick.
